London buses

The red London bus is an icon all over the world as well as being a  very reliable mode of transport when travelling around London, with in excess of 700 routes and 5 million trips made each weekday.

Bus routes are identified by a number or letter which is clearly shown on the front, side and rear of the bus and at bus stops and generally run from 6am to 12am.

Most buses allow for you to pay when you board, however those that are shown in yellow on the bus stop means that tickets must be bought in advance.  Other than paying the driver with money, other acceptable means of payment on the buses are Travel Cards and Oyster Cards.

All children under the age of 11 and those over 60 can travel for free and there are concessions for 11 to 15 years olds.

London night buses

From around midnight each night, the majority of normal bus services are replaced with a night bus service until the days buses resume work, although some of the day routes run through the night.

As with the daytime service, night buses are identified by a number with the prefix “N” which is clearly shown on the front, side and rear of the bus.  Most night buses radiate from the Trafalgar Square terminus with fares costing the same as the standard daytime buses.
